LOMAH - Land of Milk and Honey

Just living life here in the Promised Land, Southern Alberta. Where the Mountains meet the prairie in a stunning sunset, surrounded in fields of gold

Kayking - S Bend

An old picture, surfing the S Bend on the Red Deer River with Denali keeping a watchful eye. It was a perfect day, surrounded by perfect friends.

Family in Waterton

A summer hike with the family and Grandparents. It was a typical Waterton day with some wind and sun. Logan hiked the whole way in to Bertha Falls

Loves of my Life

The first two loves of my life together in one picture. I remember when they came into my life, making me whole.

Me in the Broken Group

I think this is my favourite picture from last year. We did a sea kayaking trip to the Broken Group and had 4 glorious days of sun. It was a capped off with the company of great friends.

I came across this site with some interesting pics. I know Rocco is into photography so I thought I would pass it along.

What's new in LOMAH this week.

Well as life rolls along, things here are pretty "even steven". School as started the second semester, with new classes for me. Dora gets a second round at Chem 20 and I'm still plugging along at my masters.

We had a visit by the Wilson as he was around visiting family and it was nice to catch up with him.
Also, my dad was by and spent a few weeks in our bathroom doing some tiling. It looks like we'll be getting ready to grout pretty quick. After that, it's hardware and we'll be showering downstairs. Feel free to come by when it's done to enjoy the "dueling shower head barrage"...

Next posting should be some new pictures. Our bathroom, with tile and some pictures of the new member of the extended family.... "Andy" for short.

She's on her way to Uruguay

Well for those of you who know Dora, her mom left this weekend for Uruguay. What fun she'll have as she spends a month down south during their summer!

Location of Uruguay

Map of Uruguay

We wish her a ton o' fun and look forward to hearing from her. In fact we plan on posting some things on the Blog so she can keep in contact with us for the month. Feel free to leave some comments for her.

Here is the blurb by Google

Make Gmail go where the Internet doesn't. Access your inbox through your browser and use Gmail's familiar features when you're offline. To get started, enable this lab and then click on the "Offline" link in the upper-right of your inbox.

Looks like a handy feature for those on the move. I've used Thunderbird in the past, but it looks like this might be my new ticket!

Another loss in January

I recently read a posting by Jen.... you friends will know her and the offspring of Cleo, Tiberias. Sadly, he is no longer with us. You can post your thoughts on her blog here.

New iGoogle

I've been messing around with the new feature iGoogle and am happy to say that it's working pretty good. New features are seen here.

Not sure if this worked as I'm doing this from my iGoogle page. Of particular interest is the fact that I can check my Gmail, RSS feeds, Google talk and Google calendar all from the one page. If you use even a couple of these features, it might be worth a try.....

Kilmorey update: History of the Last Fire

Here is a posting from the Waterton Scrambling Blog and a picture as well.

"sigob said...

I just drove by and it really is quite a site to see.

As for my recollections of the fire story - here is the update from my dad and mom. It also fits better with my recollection of my Grandmother and Grandfather's first hand account.
There was a smaller hotel located where the Kilmorey now was. In 1933 during the depression in burnt down under suspicious circumstances. There was a trail in the snow leading to a house and some rather obvious signs of arson. The storm had stopped and the tracks were hard to conceal. An insurance inspector came and the word was he was going to report arson. On his way back to his home office (quite some distance away) his car had a suspicious crash. The local rumor mill had it his brakes had been tampered with.
The old Kilmorey was built up after this."

Kilmorey Lodge destroyed by Fire

Well 2009 starts with a sad loss. The Kilmorey Lodge in Waterton burned to the ground today... I was almost sick at the news. So many wonderful memories in the Lightpost restaurant and bar. It's funny how certain places retain an fixed place in your mind yet can be gone like that.

Here is a reposting from the Calgary Herald.

"The Kilmorey Lodge, one of Alberta's most historic buildings and an icon of Waterton Lakes National Park, was destroyed this morning by a fire.

Four guests - a couple from Montana and a couple from Calgary, staying in separate rooms - were evacuated safely by the lodge's night auditor, who discovered the fire on the main floor at 3:45 a.m., said owner Locklynn Craig.

"It's a beautiful building. I could not believe it. I am stunned," Craig told the Herald.

The nearly 90-year-old log structure, which pre-dates Waterton's historic Prince of Wales Hotel, was "engulfed and burning to the ground within one hour," he said.

The cause of the fire is not known.

One of the original buildings in Waterton, the lodge was granted a lease within the park in 1911. Within 10 years, it had established itself as an eight-room boarding house on Emerald Bay with a reputation for fine food.

Tuesday’s fire is not the first the hotel has suffered: it burned down in 1933 but was rebuilt. It was also expanded in 1934."

Well the end of year came and went and sadly I didn't post. Here's a quick look at our home renos that are mostly complete except for the shower in the bathroom.

This was before we finished as we have carpet and flooring in as well. I'd like to note that Logan's toy room also doubles as our guest room if your so inclined. Apparently there's lots to do such as shoot hoops or play a little soccer!

Here comes Santa Claus!!

Everyone knows that Santa likes sugar cookies...

I just hope that he likes Christmas cows! I had a little helper choosing the shapes.

Nothing says Christmas like quite like cow shaped sugar cookies. Of course we still have the classic reindeer (or "boose" depending on who you are), Denali, kitty, stars, trees and lambs. We should be covered.

The end is nearerer

2 days to go and school is out for Christmas... this is a call out to see if anyone is coming back for the holidays. We should be around and I'll be doing the final reno touches on our basement. With the exception of the bathroom, everything should be done. We might get the tile done over xmas but I'd take any distraction people have to offer!

I will hopefully be posting pics of the new and improved basement later this week or early next week.

Mr. Bill lives again...

I don't know if you remember Mr. Bill from Saturday Night Live, but he lives again.... sort of.
